A strategic roadmap for the seamless integration of Mobility as a Commons in Amsterdam
Sep 2024 - ongoing
The Municipality of Amsterdam is exploring Mobility as a Commons (MaaC) as a community-driven approach to shared mobility. MaaC enables residents to collectively own, manage, and share vehicles, providing an affordable and accessible alternative to private vehicle ownership. The concept aligns with the city’s goals of reducing cars on the streets, creating more space for alternative uses, and maintaining mobility autonomy for its residents.

AAmsterdam is in need for a mobility transition due to the current unsustainable mobility system and pressure on the urban space. While shared mobility plays a key role in the city’s transition, MaaC’s potential is hindered by obstacles such as limited awareness among residents, financial constraints, and organizational complexities. Currently, the main user group is limited to those who act from an idealistic perspective and are initiative-taking. Nonetheless, the concept has the potential to adopt a much broader range of residents if better aligned with diverse user needs, motivations and barriers.
The goal of this project is to design a strategic roadmap that drives the adoption of MaaC across a wider range of Amsterdam residents by understanding and addressing the motivations and barriers faced by potential users.
The roadmap envisions a future where Amsterdam’s mobility system is both sustainable and human-centred, ensuring all residents have access to shared mobility options that meet their diverse needs. MaaC is seamlessly integrated providing residents affordable, accessible, and community-driven mobility.
