At the Expressive Intelligence Lab, we promote the human-centered development of AI by investigating how to make AI expressive as part of a product’s interactive behaviour and character, how AI can be designed to afford collaborative forms of human-product interaction and how the partnerships such products establish with people over time can be designed to be respectful, reciprocal, and socially appropriate.

We work on use-cases in healthcare, retail, and mobility by using diverse methodologies from speculative design to design methods informed by the performing arts, as well as interventionist approaches to test out prototypes in real-world settings.

One of the objectives of the Lab is to develop Key Enabling Methodologies (KEMs), which design academia, practice, and education could use and benefit from when designing intelligence embedded in products, robots and systems. Joining our efforts will enable us to shape the future of AI in a human-centered and impact-driven way.
