Storytelling with 3D stereo heritage photos
There are vast collections of online stereo pictures available in museum collections (such as the Rijksmuseum), but the only way you can experience them is by looking at these side-by-side prints shown above. This is a shame as precisely this stereoscopic medium was the main ancestor of contemporary VR systems.
In this project we aim to repair this negligence by exploring the various possibilities of contemporary image annotation and manipulation techniques. We will investigate the various scenarios under which a VR translation would be meaningful. Also, we will investigate the possibility of whether the process of making a stereo picture ready for VR consumption could be meaningful to the user. In that case, the design facilitates the user to create these experiences themselves, which would make it a citizen science project.
