Designing a new overnight train interior suitable for night-time and daytime travel
Mar 2023 - ongoing
Mobility is undergoing a profound shift worldwide. Air travel has put Europe at our fingertips and has become one of our favorite ways to travel around Europe. From a sustainability perspective, there is a huge demand for more sustainable mobility. The overnight train could be a suitable replacement for air travel for trips between 750-1500km.
The goal of this project is to design a new overnight train interior that will allow the overnight trains to be used both during the day and at night, as the current overnight trains are only used once a day because of their interiors. According to a recent study, the comfort level of the night train is a very important factor in the choice between plane and overnight train. However, little to no research has been done on comfort in overnight trains. Hence, prior to the project, a study on the comfort and perception of overnight train travel is being conducted. The project is commissioned by Royal HaskoningDHV and the results will be used to advise night train operators.
