In the Netherlands 8% of traffic fatalities involve mobility scooter drivers (scootmobiel), a disproportionately high figure when considering their relatively low numbers compared to other road users. This statistic underscores a critical safety concern, especially given that mobility scooters provide essential independence and freedom of movement for individuals with reduced mobility. Therefore, addressing the safety of this mode of transport is necessary.

 

Reasons for accidents involving mobility scooters range from losing balance because of physical obstacles to collisions with other road users. Automation might offer great potential in improving mobility scooter safety. In automated vehicles lower automation functionalities such as lane assist, adaptive cruise control or automated parking are quite common. In Schiphol recently a self-driving wheelchair was introduced, enhancing independence of travelers with reduced mobility. Raising the question, what automated functions could be tailored to mobility scooters to improve their safety.

The goal of this graduation assignment will be to:

  • Define the interactions in which automation can play a role in improving the safety of the mobility scooters.
  • Define the automation function.
  • Design the interaction between the mobility scooter, the driver, and other road users.
  • Map out the different societal and user needs involved in this context.

 

Previously the automation of vehicles was mainly driven by technology and manufacturers. Now that the technology is maturing, more attention can be given to defining relevant use scenarios where automation can give a benefit to the user and the society. The mobility scooter use-case can be a relevant example in this regard.

The assignment does not involve a specific client; this gives greater initial freedom in further defining the assignment. Later in the project it can be decided to form a collaboration with a company or stakeholder for further input.
